“Contact”

Japanese art collective
has realized a large-scale installation of choppy ocean water, titled ‘
Contact
’, as part of the
Mori Art Museum
’s sixth iteration of their Roppongi Crossing series of exhibitions. The hyper-realistic artwork suspends stormy ocean swell within the confines of a small room. A window behind the work lets natural light flood in, and as the sun moves throughout the day, the ripples appear to slightly shift in form. Consequently, the piece plays on the viewer’s perception, glistening from different angles. A statement by the collective explains that the trio work with themes that “manipulate perceptions of the physical world”, whereby their installations aim to “provoke awareness of the inherent unreliability and uncertainty in the world around us”. ‘Contact’ demonstrates just this: the ocean’s oscillating balance of power and fragility. By capturing the tumultuous nature of ocean currents in such acute detail, Mé indeed brings our attention to the uncertain future of Earth’s oceanic waters.

The Possessed

As the statues of 9 emperor gods are paraded through the streets towards the sea, the Ma Song (the possessed spirit mediums) are unaffected by the millions of firecrackers being thrown at them. - Phuket, Thailand

The artist responsible for this work is trained in illustration, graphic design and multimedia production.  In their own words   “My work as Pixel8or comes from enjoying being a passenger, it’s about preserving visual moments and presenting them as endless meditations.“  Their work, done in the genre of looping motion called cinemagraphs, is hypnotic and beautiful.

It seemed to me that in this room it was constantly raining. And the
dim light just looked timidly through the muddy glass, but never
filled this room. Dreams were a gloomy river, in the waters of which I
was sinking: an unknown force attracted me to the bottom, sealed my
throat with mud, not allowing me to scream. I didn’t see anything here
but my senses sharpened,   I felt cold wet hands on my skin… those
fingers recounted my vertebrae and ribs. I slid in the viscous space,
on the mirror surface of sleep, while fear ate my insides…
And only when I fell silent lifelessly in these arms, with wide eyes,
the room spat me out like a dead fish, rejected by depth.
